Al-Amin's family told local media the reported mental health issues are not a sufficient excuse for the teen's death. He also admitted that the victim didn't do or say anything to him, but that he felt he needed to prevent an attack before it happened.

We must call this what it is - a hate crime - and demand a thorough investigation at the highest level.

Seventeen-year-old Elijah Al-Amin was stabbed to death for listening to rap music, police say.

The accused killer, Michael Paul Adams, a 27-year-old white man, admitted to slitting the boy's throat and stabbing him with a pocketknife early Thursday morning after he heard him listening to rap music in his vehicle in the Circle K parking lot at about 1:30 a.m., according to a booking sheet filed with Maricopa County Superior Court.

Witnesses told police that Adams walked up behind the teen, grabbed him and stabbed him in the neck, according to a probably cause statement seen by AZFamily.com.

If my music makes you feel unsafe, then walk the fuck away.

According to court documents obtained by AZ Central, Adams told police that he killed Elijah because the teen was listening to rap music.

He said Al-Amin didn't do anything threatening but that the youth had been listening to rap music in his auto in the parking lot, according to the statement.

Spotify Lite launches in South Africa
As of March 2019, the music platform reported 217 million users with 46 percent of them being paid subscribers (100 million). Spotify hopes that the smaller app for those with limited data plans will help it grow its user base in developing markets.

"He told police he himself had been attacked in the past by people "...who listen to rap music", so he chose to be "proactive rather than reactive", the outlet reported. Adams was soon arrested after he admitted to officers he was involved in the stabbing. As of Monday, the suspect is being held in a Maricopa County jail on a $1 million bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in court on July 15.

Bill Lamoreaux, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Corrections, told Phoenix New Times that Adams "was not designated seriously mentally ill".

The suspected Arizona attacker had been released from prison less than 48 hours prior to the incident, and his attorney laid blame with the department of corrections for putting a mentally-ill man on the streets with no support. He had just completed a 13-month sentence for aggravated assault, according to Yahoo News.

"My son is so special and so loved and everyone loved him", Rides said. "They need a bed instead of a cell".

Civil rights advocates and 2020 candidate Cory Booker are calling for investigators to address the killing of a unlit Arizona teen last week as a loathe crime.

Young black teens are being murdered in the USA for wearing hoodies, playing with toys, listening to rap music, standing outside a store. "There is definitely a hate component to the crime", Siddiqi told AZ Central. "Our first thoughts are we are horrified of the story as well as it's an outright tragedy".
