In 1991, Nader pleaded guilty to charges of transporting visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, the US Justice Department said in June.

George Aref Nader, who was a key witness in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, faces new charges of transporting a minor "with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity" and child pornography.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges in federal court Friday, according to the Washington Post, and his trial has been set for September 30.

Nader was denied bail after Judge Leonie M Brinkema cited "the nature of the charges and [his] extensive overseas connections", the newspaper also reported.

According to three-count indictment, in February 2000 Nader brought a 14-year-old boy from Europe to the United States through Dulles International Airport and brought him to his home in Washington for sexual activity.

Nader, 60, was arrested last month at John F. Kennedy International Airport in NY.

That charge comes on top of child pornography charges that had been levelled against him when he was arrested last month.

CNN has reached out to Nader's attorneys for comment.

Elderly Native Hawaiians arrested in protest against telescope construction
On Monday, Hawaii state officials attempted to close the road to the summit so that construction could begin. Over the years, activists have staged protests and filed lawsuits to halt the telescope's construction.

An affidavit filed in federal court in Virginia describes the contents of 12 videos allegedly found on Nader's iPhone 7 in shocking detail.

This is not the first time Nader has been charged with offences involving children.

The explicit videos of minors were found on one of the phones Nader gave to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents working for the special counsel. But by the time he was charged under seal by prosecutors in Alexandria last April, he had left the country and did not return until over a year later, for treatment following heart surgery.

An well-connected adviser to the United Arab Emirates, Nader was seen by Trump allies as an operator helpful at navigating politics in the Middle East.

He helped Mueller fill in the pieces about the infamous Seychelles meeting in early 2017 that brought together Trump supporter Erik Prince and a prominent Russian government banker with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was also charged with obscenity, according to The Daily Beast.

It comes two months after the Lebanese-American businessman was charged with bringing child pornography into the USA for a second time.

They featured sexual acts with at least 12 young boys estimated to be between the ages of two and 14 years old.

Nader was convicted of abusing minors in the Czech Republic in 2003, and charged with transporting a minor to the USA for sexual purposes, but he was later acquitted.
