The golden anniversary is being celebrated at events across the country.

When Aldrin and another astronaut, Michael Collins, said they believed the trip should be directly to Mars, Mr. Trump seemed to agree. All three were born in 1930, and although Aldrin and Collins are still alive, Armstrong died in 2012 at the age of 82.

Just before Aldrin made his remarks, Trump praised the space program, vowing that it would be "going a lot further now", not only back to the moon but to Mars.

While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the surface, ex-fighter pilot Collins remained in lunar orbit where he was in touch with ground control, providing them updates on his position.

Vice President Mike Pence is marking the 50th anniversary of humanity's first moon landing at the Apollo 11 launch site.

The building is now home to NASA's Orion crew capsule, the spacecraft created to carry astronauts back to the moon by 2024 in what Bridenstine calls the Artemis program, named after the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo.

Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.

"NASA is back", the president declared, adding that Florida's Kennedy Space Center "was not a pretty picture" in the past. According to CBS News, this time, the goal is to pursue long-term space exploration rather than the singular objective of landing on the moon.

Earlier, in a launch coinciding with the anniversary, a Soyuz spacecraft carrying astronauts from the US, Russia and Italy took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazazkhstan, bound for the International Space Station.

Elsewhere in NY, organizers moved a moon-landing party from Times Square into a hotel because of a heat wave.

First in line Saturday was computer programmer Tim Turner. "Good grief! It's still incredible, the No. 1 feat of the 20th century, if not all of modern history, that first time there". The powdered orange drink Tang was back in vogue for the toasts, along with MoonPies, including a 55-pound (25-kilogram), 45,000-calorie MoonPie at Kennedy's One Giant Leap bash.

He was later a part of the Apollo 15 mission, where he served as backup commander.

Collins too is keen to return to space sooner rather than later, and has advocated for the U.S. to go "direct to Mars" rather than returning to the Moon first. Artemis will also make history by landing the first woman on the Moon. Morgan explained in a NASA interview that Apollo 11, and now his flight, represents "an accomplishment of the world and not one single country".
