Slate notes a behind-the-scenes featurette released ahead of the trailer showcases the film's use of "digital fur technology", which turns the movie's actors into a clowder of cat people.

The film, directed by Britain's Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for The King's Speech, is the first movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit stage musical 'Cats'.

The film's trailer dropped Thursday and received a horrified reaction from viewers, who complained that the human-cat hybrid CGI is nightmarish - and outraged tweeters are claiming it "white-washes" star Francesca Hayward's face. One person - who had already gone semi-viral by replacing the soundtrack with the trailer for It Chapter Two - went above and beyond, Photoshopping Nick Offerman's face on as numerous characters as he could fit in a single image.

The movie, to be released in December, features Taylor Swift in her first film role, along with Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and James Corden. "Even if they're playing cats", wrote another.

Many on Twitter voiced uneasiness over the peculiar sexiness of the humanized cats, particularly the breast-like furry mounds on some of their chests, with some wearing jewels and extra fur coats. She was previously was the principal ballerina at the British Royal Ballet.

"So how come you can clearly see this is taylor swift/the entire bottom half of her face is visible, but you wouldn't know the black lead was black unless you knew her already", tweeted one critic.

In a teaser clip released earlier this week, director Tom Hooper lauded the movie's use of "digital fur technology" to create "the most ideal covering of fur".
