Plane carrying parachutists crashes in Sweden killing all nine aboard

The small plane carrying the parachutists crashed shortly after 2pm on Sunday (local time) on an island on the Ume river after take off from Umea airport, police spokesman Peder Jonsson said. There are no survivors.

Swedish media quoted witnesses reporting that some of the parachutists were seen trying to jump off the plane just before the crash.

Amateur footage posted online by the Swedish daily Afton bladet shows the plane plunging from the sky in a vertical line.

He sent condolences to the families of the victims and said the government would stay in close touch with officials probing the crash "as it is important to investigate the cause".

The skydiving trip was organized by the Umeå Parachute Club, according to Peo Humla, the chairman of the Swedish Parachuting Association.

Umea Airport operator Swedavia said the plane was a GippsAero GA8 Airvan, a single-engine eight-seater aircraft.

The small plane created to carry parachutists crashed on an island on the Ume river shortly after taking off, police spokesman Peder Jonsson said, adding the cause for the incident was unknown.

All the victims were Swedish, with one person holding dual citizenship, police said. "Let us give a thought to those who died in the air accident at Umeå, but also to their nearest and everyone else whose lives will never really be the same again".
