Ex-Beatles McCartney and Starr reunite onstage in LA

Almost halfway through the show, McCartney announced to his fans "a surprise for us, a surprise for you, a surprise for everyone - ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Ringo Starr", according to Variety, which reported that McCartney embraced his former bandmate on stage and asked, "Are you ready to rock?" (Hint: Starr's birthday was just a week earlier, on July 7.) "Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Ringo Starr!".

Fans who turned out Saturday for the final night of his North American tour were treated to a Beatles reunion, when Ringo Starr joined McCartney onstage for his encore at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The duo hugged and exchanged a brief "I love you, man" as Ringo made his way to the drums.

"Ready to rock", Ringo responded.

"Peace and love everybody", Starr told the crowd, using his famous catchphrase. "(They're) bringing out me drums".

Then McCartney and Starr also played Helter Skelter.

"No, thank you, Paul", Starr said.

Afterward, the two old pals traded "I love yous."

"I had a great night last night love you man peace and love", he wrote. Starr had a giant grin on his face throughout the performance, then chucked his sticks into the audience and grabbed at McCartney's bass as if he were going to throw that into the crowd, too.

McCartney and Starr hadn't played together at Dodger Stadium for 53 years, when the Beatles had a gig there on August 28, 1966.

The ex-Beatles have remained friendly after the super group's bitter breakup in 1969.

As fans know, John Lennon, 40, was murdered by stalker Mark David Chapman in 1980.
