Protesters in Hong Kong clash with police, as demonstrations continue in the Chinese territory.

Protesters used the widespread fury over the hated extradition bill to drum up numbers to demonstrate against so-called "parallel traders" in Sheung Shui who buy bulk quantities of duty-free goods, which they then carry back into China to sell. Protesters threw umbrellas and hardhats at police, who retaliated by swinging batons and firing pepper spray.

The small-time mainland traders have always been a source of anger among some in Hong Kong who argue they have fuelled inflation, dodged taxes, diluted the town's identity, and caused a spike in property prices.

Many shops popular with parallel traders and mainland tourists closed in Sheung Shui, fearing being targeted by protesters. We don't want to stop travel and buying, but please, just make it orderly and legal.

The Hong Kong police said a series of clashes had occurred during the protest, calling on the demonstrators to end violence and disperse. "The Chinese government sternly supports Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the administration's continued effective ruling of Hong Kong in accordance with law", Wang said, adding that it also "supports the police in enforcing the law, maintaining social order and protecting safety of the people".

Huge demonstrations in the past month against a proposal to change extradition laws are reawakening other movements in the city.

Senior minister Peter Dutton indicated on Friday that the government would pursue symbolic-only recognition in the constitution. Any referendum question must be supported by the majority of Australian voters, as well as at least four out of six states.

Hundreds of protesters stormed Hong Kong's parliament late on July 1 as the territory marked its China handover anniversary, ransacking the building and daubing its walls with graffiti as the city plunged into unprecedented depths of political chaos. Many street-level shops were shuttered during the march.

Thousands protested in a mainland China border town Saturday against China traders, riding on the momentum of weeks of extradition bill protests in Hong Kong.

Most of the protests have taken place in and around Hong Kong's central business district, but recently demonstrators have turned their sights to parts of the territory that have seen less political activity.

When former colonial ruler Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997, Chinese Communist leaders promised the city a high degree of autonomy for 50 years.

"We want to raise awareness in Washington that the United States has to do more now to help Hong Kong become fully democratic", said a resident of the nearby town of Fanling, who was one of five people in the crowd carrying U.S. flags. But many say Beijing has been increasingly tightening its grip, putting Hong Kong's freedoms under threat.

He praised Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Hong Kong's chief executive, for her efforts, saying she and her team were persevering in "governance in accordance with the law" and that they were "not avoiding hard tasks". Thousands marched last weekend against middle-aged mainland women who sing and dance somewhat provocatively in a public park, receiving tips from older men.
