Rapinoe: 'We Need to Have a Reckoning'

Asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper what she would like to say to the American leader, Rapinoe said: "Your message is excluding people".

Megan Rapinoe gestures 4 as she holds the Trophy for the FIFA Women's World Cup. "In recent months, you've raised your voices for equality", he said to loud, affirming cheers.

Cuomo recently signed legislation demanding equal pay for male and female national teams.

"We really do appreciate all that it takes to shut down the biggest, best city in the world", Rapinoe said, as the crowd of almost 4,000 spectators erupted into cheers, "for the biggest, best team in the world!"

The ceremony was broadcast live on various networks and capped a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan.

One story to develop during the Women's World Cup was the feud between U.S. captain Megan Rapinoe and president Donald Trump.

Under bright sunny skies, office workers showered the players with white confetti thrown from the windows of skyscrapers lining Broadway. "We are very happy to accept your invitation to come", Rapinoe said after the New York Senator extended the invitation.

"This group is so resilient is so tough, has such a sense of humor, it's just so bad ass!"

"We have pink hair, purple, hair, tattoos, dreadlocks". We have tattoos, dreadlocks. We've got to listen more and talk less.

She said she didn't see kneeling during the anthem as disrespecting the flag or anthem.

Star striker Alex Morgan also addressed the crowd.

"Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!".

"But from here on out, we'll just be known as America's team".

"I think that we need to have a reckoning with the message that you have and what you're saying about Make America Great Again".

Rapinoe also discussed the ongoing fight for equal pay, and even joked around about it, concluding with how the world can use her team as an example for change.

For the record, the players and politicians haven't been the only ones pushing for equal pay during the parade.

The parade, which lasted about an hour, is in line with a NY tradition that dates back more than a century.

Rapinoe, who has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration, was one of the first athletes to follow then-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's lead in September 2016 by taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem to protest racial oppression and police brutality against black people.

Since winning it all, the USWNT has been celebrating like the champions they are, with videos of them dancing in the locker room, drinking champagne on the plane and starting chants at the New York City parade all going viral.
