Taika Waititi to Write and Direct Thor 4 Akira Put on Hold

The news of Waititi and Hemsworth back for Thor 4 isn't all that surprising as they have both stated they wanted to do another film following the success of Ragnarok. It was previously announced that a live-action film adaptation would be released via Warner Bros.in May 2021 with Taika Waititi on as director. As it turns out, Thor will be getting a fourth movie, and it looks like production is moving forward what with Marvel finding its director.

The other big piece of this news is that THR also learned Waititi's Akira movie is now on pause. That wasn't exactly a secret, though, as Hemsworth reportedly signed on for more movies with Marvel back in June. Another film pairing him with the under-utilised comic gifts of Chris Hemsworth and the increasingly unusual Marvel cosmos should be as much of delight as Marvel movies can be - especially given how much Waititi's specific weirdness was celebrated last time. The first Thor is fine, most people don't like the second one; suddenly Thor: Ragnarok made Thor the top-tier character he always should have been.

The latest Marvel team-up film ended with Hemsworth's God of Thunder heading into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy. When we last saw Thor he was joining the Guardians of the Galaxy on a new interstellar adventure, so there's a likely chance that Star Lord and crew will make an appearance. But with these three films comes the end of Phase 3, and the question of, "What is in Phase 4?".

Thor 4 unexpectedly becomes the first "officially" confirmed MCU Phase 4 movie, as well as the first standalone superhero movie to go beyond a trilogy.

News regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in scant supply since Spider-Man: Far From Home released earlier this month, but the drought has finally ended.
