Ubisoft wants your music for Watch Dogs Legion

Ubisoft wants fans to help create the Watch Dogs Legion soundtrack, but not all that glitters is gold.

The partnership was met with significant criticism, seeing as the plan expected creators to work for nothing and there was no guarantee of payment.

Specifically, Ubisoft and HitRecord have organized to commission 10 new songs for Watch Dogs: Legion. "That's why we went to HitRecord".

Ubisoft has posted a project page for Watch Dogs: Legion on HitRecord with bounties for ten different kinds of songs, such as "Aggressive Grim Punk Song". Contributors span a wide gamut.

To do that, they've partnered with hitRECord.

More information about payment is available on HitRecord's website by searching for Watch Dogs Legion here. Songs not selected will receive no payment for the work, so fans are urged to make a reasonable effort before submission.

Ubisoft and HitRecord have been working together on Beyond Good & Evil 2 for a while now, but they're doing the same work on Watch Dogs Legion, too, and that will debut much sooner as the game is slated for March 6, 2020, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The split in payment will also be decided by HitRecord. Some Twitter users have used the hashtag #nospec, which means "no speculative work". Spec work, as described by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, is "work done for free in the hopes of getting paid for it" or "work done in the hope of winning a prize, in whatever form that might take".

"This sucks. Pay people for their labour", John Wick Hex's Mike Bithell wrote. Stop exploiting fans and hobbyists while devaluing the work of those with the gall to actually expect consistent payment for work done.

Whether you're a musical composer, writer, singer, player, or someone with big ideas and a lot of passion... we are super excited to hear your music composition. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a union contract yet he's peddling spec work for a billion dollar company.

Bithell was joined by Night in the Woods co-creator, Scott Benson, as well as Vlambeer co-founder, Rami Ismail, both of whom voiced their disappointment.
