UK's Labour shifts policy, now backs new Brexit referendum

UK Labour's trade union backers support second referendum on Brexit deal

In a significant shift, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the party would campaign to stay in the European Union if a referendum were called by whoever succeeds Prime Minister Theresa May.

"Whoever becomes the new prime minister should have the confidence to put their deal, or no deal, back to the people in a public vote", Corbyn said in the letter.

In that scenario, the choice on the ballot paper would be between Labour's deal and remaining in the EU, the unions said, and how Labour campaigned in a second referendum would depend on the deal negotiated.

This will also be put to a second referendum.

But he made clear that if a referendum was called on the Brexit deal negotiated by the incoming Conservative prime minister - or on whether to go ahead with a no-deal Brexit - Labour would support Remain.

Conservative lawmakers Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt are competing for her job.

However, the majority of members of parliament - including Labour - are against a "no deal" option, fearing dire economic consequences.

The motion was agreed on Monday by the Labour Party's affiliated unions, including Unison, the GMB, CWU, Aslef, and Unite, the latter's general secretary Len McCluskey, a key ally of party leader Jeremy Corbyn, having hitherto been against a second referendum. They are voting to choose a new party leader who will automatically become prime minister.

Hunt, a long-serving but lusterless senior minister who is now foreign secretary, said he offered experience, realism and a broader appeal than the divisive Johnson.

"It makes it slightly more likely that he'll be tempted to call a Brexit election", argued Mr Mann.

In a major shift in policy Britain's main opposition Labour Party announced support Tuesday for a new referendum on a Brexit deal.

Corbyn's letter clarifies the party's position - up to a point. It's still unclear what Labour would do about Brexit if it formed a government.

Fifty-three per cent of 380 businesses polled by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and job site Indeed said they would be negatively affected by an expansion of Britain's existing minimum salary threshold for skilled workers from outside the European Union to include all migrant workers after Brexit.

"Today is a step in the right direction but our members and supporters are clear that any kind of Brexit gives us less than we have now and Labour should not support it".

Would a pro-Remain stance disenfranchise their core support?

"I think it's very important we should have a close partnership, a close friendship with the United States".

Fifty-seven per cent said they would be hurt by plans for a 12-month work and residency limit on lower skilled immigrants.
