US to Send about 500 Troops to Saudi Arabia

Following this increase in tensions, the Pentagon is reportedly preparing to send about 500 personnel to Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia. Defense officials at U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to Stars and Stripes inquiries about the deployment.

The US troops will reportedly become reinforcements to the US military and support personnel already on the site with beginning preparations for a Patriot surface-to-air missile system, a runway and other airfield improvements.

The US wanted its troops to be deployed to the airfield in the Saudi desert, as defence officials believe it would be more hard for Iran to target remote areas with its missiles.

It is understood that Pentagon officials want more troops in the region as tensions continue to sour between the U.S. and Iran.

They also said Trump's action shows that the United States is tolerating worst human rights abuses by Saudi Arabia in its war on Yemen.

But the Trump administration has said it is committed to trying to help protect Saudi Arabia against Iranian aggression.

Elderly Native Hawaiians arrested in protest against telescope construction
On Monday, Hawaii state officials attempted to close the road to the summit so that construction could begin. Over the years, activists have staged protests and filed lawsuits to halt the telescope's construction.

The US also announced it would deploy 1,000 troops in the region after an attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman that the US blames on Iran. Tehran has denied any involvement. There have also been attacks on several tankers that the USA has blamed on Iran. Some officials suspect Iran-backed militias operating in the country are behind the attacks.

President Trump has vowed to veto the resolutions, which the Senate passed last month. Iran has inched its uranium production and enrichment over the limits of the accord, trying to put more pressure on Europe to offer it better terms and allow it to sell its crude oil overseas.

The votes came against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with much of the focus on Iran. President Trump approved retaliatory military strikes but halted them minutes before they were launched.

The announcement comes one month after U.S. officials said another 1,000 troops would be deployed to the Middle East but did not specify where they would be sent. "The encampment to the east of the runway is typical of Air Force engineering squadrons deployed overseas", he said.

The deployment to the kingdom comes amid criticism of the USA government's support for a Saudi-led coalition waging a war against Houthi rebels in Yemen. In 2018, the use of that munition destroyed a school bus in Yemen that killed more than 40 children.

The move drew bipartisan condemnation, with lawmakers decrying the precedent it sets, questioning the administration's claims of an emergency and raising the issue of Saudi Arabia's human rights record and Khashoggi's murder.
