Xi urges Trump to ease N Korea sanctions

North Korea changes constitution to make Kim Jong Un official head of state

Though it lacked substance, the impromptu meeting was the first between Trump and Kim since their second summit in Vietnam in February collapsed without any agreement due to squabbling over USA -led sanctions on the North, and the two leaders agreed to resume working-level nuclear talks. The two industries make up a combined 66 percent of the country's total exports, according to Stratfor.

Ensuring the continuation of the current political system led by the Kim family is a long-sought goal by North Korea. DPRK is an acronym for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's formal name.

The meeting paved the way for a resumption in diplomacy between Washingon and Pyongyang, even though North Korea's public reaction to the talks has since been less sanguine than that of the United States.

38 North's assessment of the geopolitical dynamics around North Korea comes just a few weeks after US president Donald Trump on June 30, 2019 stepped across the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea and shook hands with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

During working-level talks ahead of the failed summit in February, the United States and North Korea, which have no diplomatic relations, had broadly agreed to take steps to improve bilateral ties and establish permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, such as opening a USA liaison office in Pyongyang.

"The focus on disarmament that the Trump administration has pursued, this all-or-nothing approach, has unfortunately left us with nothing so far", Mount said at a news conference in Seoul on Friday.

The UN Security Council imposed increasingly tough sanctions on North Korea in response to its nuclear bomb and ballistic missile tests.

'All UN member states will have to keep vigilance against deliberate attempts by the United States to undermine the peaceful atmosphere that has been created on the Korean peninsula in no easy way, ' the mission said.

"As the president has said, sanctions will stay on until the final, fully verified denuclearization" of North Korea, the source said.

A nuclear freeze would represent only the first step towards the "complete, verifiable and irreversible" dismantling of North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, as required by United Nations resolutions.

"Misinterpreting North Korea's situation is risky", 38 North's analyst added.

The report also calls for offering some sanctions relief and economic engagement in exchange for North Korean improvement on security issues, illicit transnational activities and human rights.

Ortagus denied the report, quoting top US negotiator on North Korea Stephen Biegun as calling it "completely false".

Being head of state would make Kim a protocol equal to President Donald Trump, Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping in any summits and treaty talks.

Kim accepted and at their Sunday meeting, Trump became the first sitting United States president to set foot in North Korea when he crossed the demarcation line. She said the US special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, would meet his South Korean counterpart during a visit to Europe this week to discuss ways to achieve this. Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said on Tuesday "the contacts and the discussions are ongoing" with North Korea but offered no details. But I don't think that the administration has ever characterized a freeze as being the end goal. "They can and they should do it now".
