The St. Joseph County Health Department is advising everyone to be cautious regarding ticks and mosquitoes in the Michiana area potentially carrying West Nile virus. "We typically first detect West Nile virus in mosquitoes from late-June to mid-July so this year's detection is later than usual".

This year in Europe, 33 human West Nile virus (WNV) infections have been recorded, with the bulk of the cases seen in Greece.

Twenty-three human cases, with one fatality, were reported a year ago.

The mosquito season has officially arrived with the detection of West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes trapped in the area. The positive mosquito samples were found in Herald, Elk Grove's Sheldon Heights community, south Sacramento and near Diablo Park in Sacramento County. Sanpete County Commissioner Edwin Sunderland said mosquito abatement is something the commission might want to take a look at.

London teen goes missing in Seremban

"And the risks of being bitten increase people's chances of having that bite and that mosquito transmit West Nile virus". There is a vaccine for horses, but no such preventive measure or treatment exists for humans. In 17 of the patients reported, the Central Nervous System (CNS) was affected (encephalitis and/or meningitis/acute flaccid paralysis) whereas 8 developed mild symptoms, such as fever. Mild symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash. These symptoms can last for several days to months. These symptoms may last several weeks and neurological effects may be permanent.

Experts suggest wearing clothes that cover the arms and legs, especially at dusk or when near stagnant water. Yard and parking lot drains, air conditioner drip pans/buckets, rain barrels, non-functional swimming pools, and other containers such as rain barrels, plant saucers, and old tires must be removed or sealed to prohibit mosquito access.

REDUCE: Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens and try to keep them shut.

Contact a veterinarian for information on vaccinating horses.
