Avery's family are originally from Cork city but now live in the town of Mallow.

The alarm was raised shortly after 9am yesterday when a man went for a swim in the pool and thought there was an inflatable toy floating in the water.

Councillor Paudie Dineen told Cork Beo: "We know the family very well, my wife Sandra grew up with the boy's mother Amanda, they were like sisters".

The boy was pulled from a pool at the Aguamarina urbanisation in Cabo Roig on Monday morning, local English language newspaper the Leader reports.

He was put on life support, surrounded by his devastated family.

According to the Spanish Press Agency EFE, the reasons for his accidental death are now subject to a police enquiry, having been reported to the court de guardia de Orihuela for further investigation. His parents and grandparents who were holidaying together in Spain are being provided with consular assistance through the Departent of Foreign Affairs.

"The thoughts and prayers of the people of Mallow are with them at this time".

After being given CPR at the scene, emergency services were called and the boy was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
