As it turns out, the Braves won both battles.

The Atlanta Braves blew a 2-run save opportunity about an hour and a half before the Trade Deadline against the Washington Nationals, and while that was happening they were growing traction on acquiring Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers.

Greene, 30, is earning a reasonable $4MM this year for the Tigers.

Greene now has a 1.18 ERA this season and has another year of control after this season.

Melancon, 34, has a 3.50 ERA in 43 appearances this season.

U.S., Chinese officials show signs of trade progress in Shanghai
Trump has raised tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports while Beijing responded by taxing $110 billion of US products. That hints at the signals we can expect to see from the United States between now and the resumption of talks in September.

Atlanta already has added one veteran arm ahead of the deadline, acquiring reliever Chris Martin from the Rangers on Tuesday for minor league pitcher Kolby Allard. The Giants will receive right-hander Tristan Beck and Dan Winkler from Atlanta, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.

A bullpen that was arguably the Braves' biggest weakness entering the throes of the postseason race suddenly resembles a pillar of strength.

Luke Jackson, who leads the Braves with 17 saves, has blown seven saves this season.

Greene's arrival will provide a ninth-inning anchor.

As for the Nationals, they didn't come up empty-handed, either. He managed to do so without trading away any of the organization's Top 10 Prospects.
