Canadian police find items linked to fugitive murder suspects on river bank

The manhunt in Canada for suspects Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky involved an underwater search over the weekend after a damaged aluminum boat was found near a river in Manitoba.

The RCMP kept the discovery of the items a secret until Tuesday.

RCMP Cpl. Julie Courchaine said they are investigating all possibilities including the possibility that the suspects might have drowned.

Members conducted a thorough search spanning about 29 metres in the area where the boat was found, but didn't find anything else linked to McLeod and Schmegelsky.

Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod are wanted on a second-degree murder charge for the death of a 64-year-old Vancouver man and are suspects in the shooting deaths of a young tourist couple in northern B.C. three weeks ago. The suspects have not been seen since the burnt-out auto was found on July 22.

McLeod and Schmegelsky vanished, with no confirmed sightings announced by the RCMP since.

The items were recovered Friday along the Nelson River in Manitoba, six miles from where police found a burning vehicle they believe belonged to the suspects on July 22.

Murder victims Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler. Their bodies were discovered on July 15 on a remote highway in northern British Columbia.

Days later the RCMP said the pair was being considered as suspects in the murders of Ms Deese and Mr Fowler, which took place 500km away from where Mr Dyck was found, near Liard Hot Spring.

Schmegelsky and McLeod drove a stolen grey Toyota RAV4 3000 kilometres east to Gillam before torching it and apparently fleeing into the wilderness.

A police helicopter initially spotted the boat and a follow-up search in the area uncovered the items directly linked to the two.

Survival experts said the teenagers would struggle to stay alive in the swampy, bug-infested wilderness for more than a week without the appropriate clothing and shelter.
