Cardinal George Pell loses appeal on child sexual assault conviction

Cardinal George Pell arrives at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Melbourne. His appeal was thrown out

The Vatican's former financial chief, 78-year-old Australian Cardinal George Pell, will remain in prison for at least another three years after the Victoria state Court of Appeal dismissed his lawyer's efforts to overturn a conviction for child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence.

The court has to consider factors including whether them hearing an appeal is a matter of public importance, whether the decision relates to a matter of law, or if it's in the interests of the administration of justice. While Pell's attorneys argued in the charm that the jury will must salvage had practical doubt, the prosecutors acknowledged contrasting evidence from better than 20 monks, choristers, altar servers and church officials nonetheless did now not preclude responsible verdicts.

Is it possible that as challenging as Wednesday's ruling may have been for the three justices on the appeals court in Victoria, or as hard as the task awaiting the Australian High Court may be if Pell does indeed submit a filing, all that will seem child's play compared to the headaches awaiting the Vatican's own judges, depending on what happens next?

The earliest Pell can be released is October 2022, when he will be 81. Gibson suggested to the jury that Portelli might have gone outside the cathedral to smoke a cigarette, leaving Pell to enter the sacristy alone and abuse the boys.

The trial heard testimony from one of the victims. His friend, identified as M.R., died of a heroin overdose in 2014 at the age of 31 without ever complaining he had been abused. But each juries saw a video of a police interview of him in Rome in 2016 by blueprint of which Pell rejected the allegations as "completely disgraceful rubbish" and a "deranged falsehood".

Right to further appeal "As the proceedings continue to develop, the Holy See recalls that the Cardinal has always maintained his innocence throughout the judicial process and that it is his right to appeal to the High Court", said the Vatican statement.

"Justice Weinberg came across that the complainant's sage of the 2nd incident used to be exclusively fabulous and rather unconvincing", Ferguson acknowledged.

Pell, who was present for the hearing, had faced the prospect of a retrial or being immediately set free if his appeal had been successful. "I am not going to be cowed by the people who've tried to get me kicked off Sky News, boycotted the advertisers etc for saying what I believe to be true, that George Pell is not guilty beyond reasonable doubt".

Occasionally, he looked down, his gaunt features betraying no emotion. The resolution brought cheers from scores of abuse survivors and victims' advocates demonstrating open air courtroom.

After being under investigation for two years in Australia, Cardinal Pell was formally charged at the end of June 2017 with multiple counts of "historical sexual assault offenses" in two separate cases.

"Catholics everywhere owe thanks to the incredibly courageous victim who brought Pell to justice", the group said in a statement.

"My journey has not been an easy one", he said in a statement read by his lawyer.

"Cardinal Pell is obviously disappointed with the decision", her statement said.

Following Wednesday's ruling Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison expressed sympathy for the victims. "Not just on this day, but on every single day".

The Maltese-born immigrant also testified that he would have seen Pell squeeze a choirboy's genitals as he shoved the teen against a cathedral wall if the indecent assault had happened after a Mass in February 1997 as the complainant had testified.

Will there be another appeal?

What does the Church say?

Second, the global media would come down on the Vatican and the Church like a ton of bricks, making much of the contrast between a civil system of justice that found Pell guilty despite his exalted status and a Church system which, in their view, would have kowtowed to power and influence. His five-year term as Vatican treasurer elapsed soon afterwards.
