Dark Chocolate May Relieve Depression

An older study that averred more depressed people eat chocolate and a recent "finding" that eating chocolate alleviates depression appears to be another similar conundrum.

Dark chocolate has been a foodie hero for quite some time and now we know why.

Chocolate is widely reported to have mood‐enhancing properties and several mechanisms for this link have been proposed. The study looked at whether different types of chocolate are associated with mood disorders. The study published in the journal 'Depression and Anxiety, ' is the first study to do that. Depression is a condition characterised by persistent despair and feeling of dejection.

Researchers from the University College of London (UCL) assessed data from 13,626 adults from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the study. They examined participants' chocolate consumption against the Patient Health Questionnaire scores. On the other hand, according to WHO the World Health Organization, 200, almost 30 million people worldwide are affected by depression and are one of the most prominent causes of disability.

Fortunately, these researchers have also clarified that their study has not found evidence to show that eating any sweetmeat other than chocolate causes or increases depression, otherwise there may have been consternation among those with a sweet tooth - of which there are plenty in India.

New research has found that dark chocolate could lower the risk of depression by up to 70%.

The study also considered some of the factors such as marital status, household income, height, education, physical activity, weight, and chronic health issues were also taken into consideration to ensure that the study only measures the effect of chocolates on depressive symptoms. The lead author from UCL, Dr Sarah Jackson, said.

"Should a causal relationship demonstrating a protective effect of chocolate consumption on depressive symptoms be established, the biological mechanism needs to be understood to determine the type and amount of chocolate consumption for optimal depression prevention and management". Chocolate contains various psychoactive fixings, which produce a sentiment of happiness like that of cannabinoid, found in cannabis.

Some evidence also suggests that mood improvements only take place if the chocolate is palatable and pleasant to eat, which suggests that the experience of enjoying chocolate is an important factor in itself, and not just the ingredients present. Not only that, dark chocolate contains flavonoids, antioxidants, and many other chemicals that play an important role in repairing depression.
