Another guest, former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, attempted to lower the temperature of the conversation.

Maher made similar comments in the Overtime segment of his late-night show last week, saying that a recession would be "worth it", despite the contention of business columnist Josh Barro, who reminded him that "recessions are really bad" and that many people would lose their jobs.

During a discussion on his show with panelists including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), Maher said the USA could "survive" another recession but warned it would not withstand a second term of a Trump presidency.
