Epstein: How he died and what it means for his accusers

In a shocking turn of events today, multiple news outlets in the United States have reported that Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead in his prison cell, after he allegedly commit suicide.

"The FBI is investigating the incident", the statement added.

Even so, Epstein had recently been taken off suicide watch, a special set of procedures for inmates in danger of killing themselves, according to the source, who said the financier was in a cell by himself when his body was found.

His body was found at 11.30 GMT on the floor of his cell in NY.

Another accuser, Jennifer Araoz, who came forward after the new charges were filed, said she was angered by Epstein's suicide.

Sigrid McCawley, an attorney representing one accuser, said in a statement that "the reckoning of accountability begun by the voices of courageous and truthful victims should not end" with Epstein's death.

Five separate investigations ruled the death a suicide, but conspiracy theorists have continued to insist that the Clintons played a role.

The city medical examiner's office confirmed Epstein's death but not what caused it.

In July, Epstein was arrested on child sex trafficking charges and remained under indictment, awaiting trial, until he was reported dead by ABC News on Saturday.

Epstein was supposedly kept under this supervision after he was found semi-conscious on the floor of his cell two weeks ago, with marks on his neck.

May 2006: Epstein is charged with unlawful sex acts with a minor.

He was denied bail last month in a NY court because he was deemed a flight risk.

He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted. But he was taken off of suicide watch at the end of July, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press Saturday.

"We need answers. Lots of them", tweeted New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In a deposition included in the newly released papers, Giuffre said that her father, who worked at Mar-a-Lago as a maintenance manager, got her a job there in summer 2000 as a locker room attendant at the club's spa when she was 16.

His death comes a day after unsealed documents in New York revealed the extent of his abuse of young women at his home in Palm Beach, New York and the Virgin Islands.

In them, Virginia Giuffre, now an adult, claims that she was forced to have sex with well-known American political and business personalities. Clinton, Apollo Global Management LLC co-founder Leon Black and Glenn Dubin, co-founder of hedge fund Highbridge Capital Management, have all said they regret associating with him.

They claim that Epstein was "well aware that numerous victims were minors". I only learned of his actions when they were reported in the media related to his prosecution in Florida.

They have all denied knowing anything about his alleged crimes.

The charges were announced more than a decade after he pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of solicitation of prostitution from a minor in a deal with prosecutors that has been widely criticized as too lenient.

He previously served 13 months behind bars but spent much of that time on work release. Alexander Acosta, the Florida attorney general at the time, resigned as Trump's Labor Secretary last month.
