Facebook reportedly offering 'millions' to publishers for news

Facebook is courting publishers with multi-million dollar deals to launch its news tab this fall

Facebook has reportedly offered several news outlets millions of dollars in exchange for the rights to display their content in a news section it plans on adding.

While that's a pretty big number, the report didn't mention if Facebook was paying $3 million to individual publishers or all news publishers that it wanted to work with, combined.

The move comes just a few months after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that his company was mulling building a dedicated tab for news, and is willing to pay publishers for high-quality content.

The report comes from the Wall Street Journal, which spoke to a person familiar with the matter on the condition of anonymity.

Overall, Facebook's relationship with the news industry has been highly contentious.

Since they were partitioned in 1947, the two countries have fought three wars - in 1948, 1965 and 1971 - two of them over Kashmir. India-controlled Kashmir has been under an unprecedented security lockdown to prevent unrest as the decisions were announced.

Facebook's earlier attempts at bringing news content to the platform took the form of Instant Articles, which, like Google Amp pages, surfaced News articles in a light, mobile-friendly format hosted by Facebook. Alongside Google, Facebook now controls a majority of the digital advertising industry in the U.S., having effectively captured huge swaths of online ad revenue from newspapers, magazines, and digital media companies over the last decade or so.

Campaign contacted Facebook but it had not responded at the time of writing.

The proposal already has drawn some harsh reaction, as many news outlets - and journalists - are wary of the plan in the wake a broken Facebook pledge years ago.

The Washington Post, which was also named in the report as a company Facebook approached, declined to comment.
