Vaping concerns grow as FDA probes 127 seizure and neurological cases

The FDA reminded the public this week to keep submitting incidents that may show the link between the use of e-cigarettes and seizures.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) started analyzing the connection in April, and has since received 92 new reports from Americans, most of whom are in their teens, who were hospitalized by their e-cigarettes in the last 10 years - adding to 35 reports they already had. At this time, the administration said they can not definitively determine if e-cigarettes directly cause seizures and other neurological events.

Other information sought by the FDA includes: any use or exposure to other tobacco products, medications, supplements, substances of abuse, or toxins around the same time; any other symptoms or warning before the seizure, such as nausea, vomiting, change in the user's behavior, alertness, vision, or hearing; and past history of e-cigarette use. The cases happened between 2010 and 2019, but don't necessarily indicate an increase in frequency or prevalence. "Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine toxicity", the agency said at the time.

Democrats, meanwhile, reacted viscerally to Trump's handling of the shootings, angrily renewing their calls for his defeat. Mr Trump pointed to a mental illness problem in the U.S. , calling the shooters "really very seriously mentally ill".

This report comes as an update to the initial announcement in April when former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the reports had alerted the agency that e-cigarettes posed a public health risk.

When reporting a problem, the FDA asks for as much information as possible to help identify trends, patterns, or causes. Several people had previously had a seizure diagnosis, the agency said at the time, and a few had also been using other drugs such as marijuana.

"Additional reports or more detailed information about these incidents are vital to help inform our analysis", Sharpless said Wednesday. We're committed to monitoring this issue closely and taking additional steps as necessary to protect the public, especially our nation's youth, from the dangers of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products.
