Gunman Flees After Killing 2 on Houston Highway With Assault Rifle

Police in Texas are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a freeway in Houston during the evening rush hour Thursday, killing a driver and his passenger. A motive for the shooting remains unclear and detailed descriptions of the vehicles involved were scarce, with police only saying that both cars appeared to be four-door sedans and that the victims' auto was silver.

There were two people inside the targeted vehicle.

Bobby Dobbins, an assistant police chief, told reporters that the shooting happened after two cars crashed.

He said in a news conference that "one of the vehicles struck the other vehicle and spun it out", describing it as similar to "a pit manoeuvre". Witnesses said two suspects got out of their auto just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, then opened fire on two individuals in another vehicle.

One driver told authorities he fired at the shooter with a pistol that he carries for personal protection.

According to a statement from police: "Witnesses observed an unknown Hispanic male - possibly in his early 20s, thin build, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing a red shirt - on the freeway running towards the victims' vehicle, firing multiple times". Both the gunman - described as a Hispanic male in his 20s - and his other passenger fled the scene in their auto. It's unknown if the gunman was injured.

Unlike similar warnings from the USA government, however, the State Department and embassy published a map of the protest route. In both cases, the embassy advised American citizens to avoid the areas where the demonstration would take place.

Police later found narcotics in the victims' vehicle.

The victims have been identified as two males, aged 25 and 33, although their names have not been released.

Police sources told ABC 13 that the deceased duo's silver Nissan uncovered a large trash bag containing marijuana.

Dobbins believes that witness accounts and descriptions are hazy because most drivers who saw the two cars but didn't witness the shooting didn't pay attention, assuming they were passing an accident on the freeway. They died at the scene. "We just don't know".

Anyone with information about this crime should call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600.

KHOU11 reports that the shooter was using an AR-15 and did not stop firing until a Good Samaritan in a nearby truck began shooting his own weapon at the man.

This is a developing story.
