Fox News Flash top headlines for August 6 are here. Among the attendees were several high-level politicians, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"Around the world today, we see self-centered nationalism in ascendance, tensions heightened by global exclusivity and rivalry, with nuclear disarmament at a standstill", Matsui said in his peace declaration.

Matsui also demanded Japan's government represent the wills of atomic bombing survivors and sign a United Nations nuclear weapons ban treaty.

He added that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki shouldn't only be viewed as historical events, but should also be considered as learning points to build better relations and decrease tensions in the global spectrum.

The mayor urged world leaders to come to the city to see the memorial for themselves, amid expectations that Pope Francis will visit later this year. A moment of silence was observed at 8.15am, the exact time on August 6, 1945, when a uranium-core atomic bomb named "Little Boy" dropped by a USA bomber exploded above Hiroshima killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of that year, reports Kyodo News Agency.

For his part, Abe reiterated a pledge to serve as a "bridge" between nations with and without nuclear weapons to rid the world of them. The treaty is not yet in force since it has not been ratified by the required 50 states. Meanwhile in Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan will serve tenaciously as a "mediator between nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states" and "take the lead in making such efforts" in the worldwide community. He stopped short of promising to sign the treaty.

Over 20,000 Japanese soldiers and around 140,000 civilians were killed in the Hiroshima bombing, which was conducted in concurrence with a second atomic bombing of Nagasaki, where the death toll is estimated to be around 74,000.
