Way back in January, Tate Martell decided he was going to leave Ohio State after then-Georgia quarterback Justin Fields decided he was going to take his talents to the Buckeyes.

Perry split time with now-graduated Malik Rosier at quarterback for Miami last season.

Williams, who was once committed to Kentucky twice in his recruitment before finally flipping to Miami, played in only one game last season and threw three passes all season.

Redshirt freshman Jarren Williams has been declared the victor of the three-player quarterback competition.

The competition between Perry and Martell is still open for the backup spot, and Diaz said that will continue as the team prepares for its August 24 season-opener against Florida.

"All three guys showed tremendous improvement and development, which is a credit to their hard work and the work of Dan Enos and his offensive staff", Diaz said in a statement. Eight months later, he has been named the starter.

"It means the world", Williams said of the opportunity.

Williams may have entered the spring and summer as the No. 3 in the minds of many, but he impressed Miami coaches with his performance in practice and camp.

"I was always a big believer in Martell and I'm surprised he didn't break through and win the job". When I was six years old, I used to sit in front of the TV and watch Michael Vick play. "I feel like I have gotten a lot better, but my goal is perfection and I am still striving for that". Per 247Sports he was the No. 77 overall recruit, the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback, and the No. 10 prospect from Georgia.

Perry wasn't too accurate in 2018 either.

As a Buckeye, Martell completed 23 of 28 passes for one touchdown, adding another 128 yards and two scores on the ground.

Can Williams improve upon those paltry numbers in 2019?
