Minecraft's Super Duper Graphics Pack canceled for being 'too technically demanding'

Mojang cancels Minecraft's Super Duper Graphics Pack.

Mojang cancels Minecraft's Super Duper Graphics Pack.

We've seen this happen many, many times over the years: Developers show impressive trailers with unbelievable graphic fidelity at E3, but the final product that ships a couple of months or years later looks nothing like what we saw in early teasers.

It would seem that the future of the Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack is no more! According to a Minecraft representative, "the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned".

Are you disappointed by Mojang's decision to cancel its Super Duper Graphics Pack two years after the initial announcement? Considering this pack was announced as a way to showcase the power of Scorpio (Xbox One X) and that it will now never see the light of day, to say it's disappointing, is a bit of an understatement.

Mojang's statement went on to say that the studio wasn't happy with how the update was performing across the different platforms Minecraft on which is now available, which range from Xbox One X to smartphones.

Perseid Meteor Shower To Put On An Extravagant Show Tonight
The much-anticipated meteor shower will, again, come to a climax Monday night, leading into the wee hours of Tuesday, August 13th. The Perseids occur as a result of Earth passing through the path of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it orbits the sun.

Despite canceling work on the Super Duper Graphics Pack, Mojang says it is still looking into other ways for players to experience Minecraft with a new look. This would have introduced volumetric lighting, textures with reflective surfaces, dynamic shadows, the conversion of flat textures to 3D models, and more.

Minecraft is the only first-party Microsoft game not to have Xbox One X enhancements, and it's unclear whether this is the end of the road when it comes to that.

The announcement doesn't get much more specific than that, so we don't know exactly which platforms were holding the DLC back.
