US national security adviser John Bolton, visiting London this week, said that Washington would enthusiastically support a no-deal Brexit if that is what the British government made a decision to do and that a trade deal with the United States would help cushion the blow of Britain's departure from the EU. The existence of a powerful bipartisan Irish American voting bloc, adamant that it will not be complicit in any arrangement that undermines the 1998 Good Friday accord, is nearly certain to complicate US-UK trade negotiations still further.

Nancy Pelosi also said this had to include a seamless border on the island of Ireland.

"The Good Friday Agreement serves as the bedrock of peace in Northern Ireland and as a beacon of hope for the entire world".

He travels to Ireland a day later to voice United States commitment to "upholding the Good Friday Agreement, expanding bilateral trade and investment, and strengthening the economic relationship between our two countries", according to the White House. "After centuries of conflict and bloodshed, the world has witnessed a miracle of reconciliation and progress made possible because of this transformative accord", the veteran Democrat said.

"I came by train with my daughter to Belfast and the difference from what we went through then and what we saw in terms of tanks and wire- well, you know full well what we saw", she said at the time.

There is no chance of Congress approving a US-UK trade agreement if Brexit undermines the Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has said.

During a visit aimed at reassuring Britain over British-U.S. ties, Bolton told British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that Trump wants to see a successful Brexit and that Washington would be ready to work quickly on a trade pact.

Reimposing controls along their shared border if Britain leaves without a deal - a so-called "hard Brexit" - would put the 1998 peace accord in jeopardy.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi has spoken out about the threat to stability caused by Brexit, and has added her voice to Irish-Americans in congress who swore last month that they would block any trade deal if Brexit causes a hard border in Ireland. She addressed the Dáil and travelled to the border region.

Bolton said during his London visit there was "zero chance" that a no-deal Brexit would undermine the accord. "Boris Johnson's administration now has to recalculate its strategy and return to the cold reality that the backstop is the only show in town".
