The federal space agency came up with the tribute after their InSight lander knocked over a golf-ball sized stone as it touched down on the planet in November 2018, sending it rolling a metre away.

Here's the video of Downey's announcement.

Having helped NASA land all of its Mars missions since 1997, JPL geologist Matt Golombek is a rock star in his own right.

Frontman Mick Jagger and his band, comprised of Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts, played their famous songs including "Start Me Up", "Sympathy for the Devil" and the victor of the fan vote, "She's a Rainbow". He further said, "I want to bring it back on put it on our mantelpiece".

Downey made a decision to crash a Rolling Stones concert in Los Angeles to break the big news - NASA just found a new rock on the surface of Mars and it looks like it's been officially named after the rock n' roll band.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger appeared smitten with the honor, or his tongue may have been firmly in cheek.

"Cross-pollinating science and a legendary rock band is always a good thing." said Downey Jr at the concert.

Tottenham boss Pochettino: Eriksen fine amid transfer talk
The 27-year-old has one year left on his contract and according to reports isn't interested in signing a new deal with Tottenham. Eriksen is holding out for a move to a top European club, having reportedly turned down the chance to join Manchester United.

Robert Downey Jr. this week shared a weird video on Twitter, teasing the reveal of what he said "may be the most exciting thing I've ever done".

"Tonight, @NASAInSight named "@RollingStones Rock" after the band, who is playing a show at @RoseBowlStadium near our lab. While landing on the red planet surface it displaced a rock that rolled a fair distance in view of its on-board cameras. But scientists working with the Mars Rovers, NASA, gave a lot of informal nicknames the rocks and other geological features. NASA and the Rolling Stones followed suit, and you can see all of those posts below.

The concert had originally been scheduled for the northern spring, before the Stones postponed their No Filter North American tour because Jagger had heart surgery.

He did poke fun at his advanced years. Sir Mick said that Iron Man was the fave action hero of The Rolling Stones. "At least I think we've been here before".

And he took a dig at President Donald Trump's recent talk of acquiring Greenland when introducing his bandmates.

"On the drums", the singer shouted, "Greenland's new economic adviser - Charlie Watts!"
