One person was injured during an armed attack at a mosque in Norway on Saturday, police said, adding that members of the congregation had overpowered the gunman and stopped the shooting.

An initial statement by the police had said one person was shot in the attack.

An older man sustained light injuries, police told a news conference, but said it was too early to say if the wounds were caused by the gunshots or sustained during the attempt to restrain the gunman.

Police said they had no information about the suspect, other than he was described as "white". "He broke through a glass door and fired shots".

The Oslo Police Department said on Twitter that the shooting took place Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning NZT) in Baerum.

Breivik, who said he was motivated by his hatred of multiculturalism, killed 77 people in gun and bomb attacks in Norway in July 2011, many of them teenagers. "He started shooting around him", Mushtaq said.

Police said a suspect had been arrested and there was no indication more people were involved, the Agence France-Presse news agency reported.

Police sources told public broadcaster NRK that several weapons were found inside the mosque, located in the town of Baerum, following the shooting.

"We're following the events and are continuingly evaluating".

Budstikka said it had contacted the mosque in March after the Christchurch massacre and that officials there had said security would be tightened.

Breivik, who said he was motivated by his hatred of multiculturalism, detonated a massive bomb in Oslo that killed eight people and then opened fire on a gathering of the Labour Party's youth wing on the island of Utoya, killing another 69 people, majority teenagers.
