A CHP officer and a suspect were killed and two officers were seriously injured in a gun battle in Riverside, officials say.

The extent of injuries on the two CHP officers has not been made immediately available.

The officer put out a call for help which brought officers from CHP, Riverside Police and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department to the scene, Railsback said.

Other officers arrived and started shooting, Parker said, eventually hitting and killing the suspect.

Parker said the first CHP officer who was wounded was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Dozens lined up and saluted as the officer's flag-draped body was removed from the hospital and placed in a hearse.

Officer Andre Moye, Jr. was killed Monday night.

The shootout occurred around 5:30 p.m. (0030 GMT) in Riverside, California, about 55 miles (86 km) east of Los Angeles just off U.S. Interstate 215, CHP Assistant Chief Scott Parker said at a press conference.

The slain officer, Moye, graduated from a police academy in 2017 and had been a CHP officer for nearly three years, a release from the governor's office said.

Moye is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings, the release said.

"This tragedy is devastating and we are grief-stricken by this frightful situation that once again reminds us of the constant risk faced by law enforcement", Brad Houle, the president of CAHP Credit Union, said in a statement.

The 30-year-old receiver said he "immediately discontinued use" and reported the situation before the failed test was confirmed. Tate claims that as soon as he found out, he alerted the National Football League before a failed test was confirmed.

"I am devastated by the tragedy that unfolded earlier in Riverside". Tonight, I mourn the loss of one of our own, CHP Officer Andre Moye, who was killed during a shootout following a traffic stop. "Prayers go out to all, including the responding officers injured in the shooting".

"He engaged our officer with multiple gunshots", Parker said.

His motive for shooting the officer is still unknown. He will be "remembered for his commitment to service and the community of Riverside County".

Giving an update on the investigation, Diaz told reporters: "Here's what we don't know at this time: we don't know where the suspect was coming from, where he was headed to, what his affiliations are". And we won't speculate on that.

Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, said traffic stops and domestic violence calls are the most risky situations for police.

The names of the hospitalized officers were not released by authorities.

The shooter was identified by family as 49-year-old Aaron Luther of Beaumont, who was a felon and should not have been in possession of a gun, his father told KABC-TV.

"It's hard. I love him".

"I think he just, whatever else was going on with his domestic situations and his pain, I think he just thought he didn't have much to live for, and I think this might have been suicide by the police", Luther told KTLA5 from his home.

Police say the officers initiated some sort of stop with the suspect before the suspect and an officer exchanged gunfire.
