Perseid meteor shower will compete with light of full moon

A moon setting before 1 a.m. local time on August 4, 5, and 6 in the United States, will make the night sky ideal for meteor shower watching. During this period, the meteor shower builds in intensity until it spectacularly erupts over one night, dubbed the peak.

The two meteor showers are coinciding tonight will make sky watching a fantastic experience, especially when the moon is barely visible as will pose no disturbances.

Still, the Perseid shower likely will put on a better show than the Delta Aquarid shower, which peaked Wednesday. Early reports say there are quite a few fireball meteors this go-round with the Perseid meteor shower. The meteors from Alpha Capricornids are not that brighter.

Rather than the usual 60 to 80 meteors per hour, skygazers will see 10 to 20 per hour.

The Perseids burst out into our night skies every year between late July and the end of August. But the July 28-July 29 is the peak timing.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center announced: "The Perseid meteor shower is here".

The Perseid shower has been putting on a preview of sorts since July 17 - one to three meteors per night - and will peak August 12-13 before fading to a conclusion August 24.

Astronomers say that in 2019, the expected density of the meteor stream for about 120 per hour. The astronomers advise the people to visit the dark place where there are no light or visual disturbances to observe the meteor shower.

Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of these big astronomical events here in the Hudson Valley, whether they be meteor showers or lunar eclipses, face cloudy skies and/or storms when they happen. Weather.gov says that Friday, August 9 could see a chance for thunderstorms here in the Valley, though hopefully the forecast is still too far off to be completely accurate.
