The defendant will appear at Thames Magistrates Court on Friday, August 9, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

The officer was attacked around midnight after attempting to stop a van at the junction of Coopers Lane and Leyton High Road in Leyton, east London.

The attack prompted outrage from policing leaders and politicians.

A man has been charged following an attack on a police officer in Leyton.

'He told me he was okay, but that's the type of character he is - he is an awesome police officer.

The officer, whose name has not been released, underwent surgery yesterday morning and is now out of danger. He's expected to make a full recovery.

Boris Johnson has offered his sympathies to the police officer and says the attack in Leyton last night "underscores the bravery" of our police, and shows the importance of investing in them.

Fellow policemen pinned the crazed driver down and made the arrest, while the injured officer nursed his bleeding injuries.

The officer was able to Taser a suspect while he was being stabbed in the head and body in Leyton, east London.

When officers approached the van driver, he attacked the uniformed police officer with a machete before the officer drew and deployed his Taser, police said.

The driver, in his fifties, initially failed to stop before pulling over a short while later.

He said: "When the suspect got back in the van, a violent struggle ensues where he produces a weapon and stabs our officer in the head and around the body".

Passers-by rushed to help the officer and helped detain the man before reinforcements arrived.

One witness heard him screaming, while Muhammad Faisal, 31, described the aftermath as a "shocking" scene. Next to him was his police uniform ...

"They were providing him assistance to his head".
