Greenland has a population of around 57,000 people and is situated between the North Atlantic and Artic oceans.

On Friday, the president revealed he had a great conversation with Mette Frederiksen, saying he appreciated her initiative to put a call in to speak with him.

The Donald Trump administration is planning to open a US consulate in Greenland for the first time in decades amid increased strategic and economic interest in the Danish territory.

Frederiksen told Denmark's TV2 network that she would not engage in a "war of words" with Trump over the matter, and Trump later reversed course on his earlier comments about her comments, calling Frederiksen a "wonderful woman". "She shouldn't treat the United States that way".

The State Department said it has already assigned a Greenlandic affairs officer working out of the US Embassy in Copenhagen.

Russia, China, the US, Canada and other countries are racing to stake as strong a claim as they can to Arctic lands, hoping they will yield future riches.

But, she added, "Denmark and the U.S. are not in crisis, the USA is one of our closest allies" and the invitation to visit was still open.

But now there will be more questions surrounding the potential move because it follows the dramatic proposal to purchase Greenland, he said.
