Sue Gordon Resignation Shows Trump Wants 'Personal Loyalty — Ex-CIA Boss

Retired US Navy officer Joseph Maguire was appointed by President Donald Trump as acting director of National Intelligence, prior to the upcioming resignation of current director, Dan Coats. "A new Acting Director of National Intelligence will be named shortly". She worked with thousands of intelligence professionals throughout the course of her career.

In a handwritten letter to Trump reviewed by The Washington Post, Gordon wrote that she had offered her resignation "as an act of respect & patriotism, not preference. You should have your team".

It is not clear what prompted the resignation of Gordon, a career intelligence official who had the backing of current and former officials because of her deep experience. The individual was not authorized to publicly discuss the decision and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Maguire, 67, will assume the role August 15, when Gordon leaves her position.

"Sue Gordon is a great professional with a long and distinguished career", the president said on Twitter, adding he had "great respect for her". Nearly immediately upon learning of Ratcliffe's proposed nomination, senior Democrats on Capitol Hill expressed outrage at what they considered Trump's politicization of the DNI position by selecting a partisan ally.

Though she did not specifically cite her reasons for leaving, Gordon had previously hinted at some of the problems plaguing the current administration.

"And if he time working with me at the CIA was disqualifying for this position, well, that's probably disqualifying of thousands of dedicated women and men at the CIA and throughout the intelligence community that I worked with over the years". I have seen it in action first-hand for more than 30 years. "Know that our people are our strength and they will never fail you or the nation. You are in good hands", she said.

A relative unknown outside of intelligence circles, Maguire is a much more conventional pick for the job, created in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks to prevent another such intelligence failure.

"It has been a privilege serving with Sue Gordon to lead... the intelligence community over these past two years".

The Oslo Police Department said on Twitter that the shooting took place Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning NZT) in Baerum. An initial statement by the police had said one person was shot in the attack.

While Trump praised Gordon in public, there was no shot she was going to replace Coats.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Maguire assured lawmakers he would not allow politics to influence how intelligence would be presented to the president.

Coats said he was pleased that Trump had chosen Maguire to serve as acting DNI.

Brushing aside historical protocol, president Donald Trump has again not nominated the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence to succeed the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). "This is no different".

Trump did not mention which media reports he said had treated Ratcliffe unfairly.

Brennan left the administration in 2017 as Trump took over the presidency.

"This is a real loss to our intelligence community", Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner, a Democrat, said in a statement late Thursday.

"The mission of the intelligence community is to speak truth to power".
