Dozens killed as fuel tanker explodes in Tanzania

60 people have been killed and 65 injured after a fuel tanker exploded in Tanzania, according to police.

The incident happened at Morogoro, around 120 miles west of the capital Dar es Salaam.

Wilbrod Mutafungwa, police commissioner for Morongo, told reporters that work was ongoing to reach a "conclusive" number of those killed.

Spokesman for the Tanzanian Government Hassan Abbasi said news of the deaths was "received with sadness".

The governor said the explosion was triggered when a man tried to pull out the truck's battery, while witnesses said one of the people looting the fuel was smoking a cigarette.

A video posted on social media showed dozens of people busy trying to recover fuel in yellow jerricans.

The bodies have been taken to Morogoro Regional Hospital.

"The fire was huge and it was challenging to rescue victims", Daniel Ngogo, who saw the explosion, told Reuters.

In May, at least 58 people died in Niger when a tanker exploded.

Reports indicate that the victims included motorcyclists who rushed to the scene in Msamvu to collect leaking fuel after the vehicle overturned.

Firefighters fro Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF) and Fire Brigade have since been carrying out a rescue operation.

Almost 80 people died in May in a similar incident near the airport of Niger's capital Niamey.
