Chris Sale Will Not Need Tommy John Surgery

Chris Sale will avoid Tommy John surgery, ESPN's Jeff Passan is reporting. "Dr. Andrews confirmed that Sale has inflammation in his left elbow and treated it with a platelet-rich plasma injection". Initial readings showed changes from the MRI he took in the spring but weren't clear enough to definitively judge whether there was damage to his ulnar collateral ligament.

The Boston Red Sox are breathing a sigh of relief on Monday.

A timetable for his return remains unclear. He was scheduled to spend the team's day off on Monday and sought a second opinion from renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Florida.

Through 25 starts this season, Sale is 6-11 with a 4.40 earned run average and WHIP of 1.086 over 147.1 innings pitched.

Sale has not been available to reporters since the Sox placed him on the injured list on Saturday.

This is great news for the Red Sox and Sale, who recently signed an extension to stay in Boston for the next few years.
