Uganda Launching New Experimental Ebola Vaccine Trial

The Ebola virus causes fever, vomiting and severe diarrhoea, often followed by organ failure and internal and external bleeding. It is highly contagious and often fatal.

Earlier on Thursday, President Felix Tshisekedi's office had said Rwanda had made a "unilateral decision" to close the border after a third case of Ebola had been detected in Goma.

"Traffic between Goma and (the neighbouring Rwandan city) of Gisenyi resumed on Thursday afternoon after being closed in the morning without explanation", a statement from the Congolese presidency said.

About 45,000 people a day go through the main border post, an immigration official said. Since the beginning of the epidemic, only around half of the new reported Ebola cases have been identified as contacts of previous confirmed cases before falling ill and seeking treatment, or dying without receiving proper treatment for Ebola.

However, in Geneva World Health Organisation (WHO) spokeswoman Margaret Harris said 538 primary and secondary contacts had so far been traced of all four Ebola patients in Goma.

"We are carrying out investigations", he added.

The new case is the wife of a miner who died of the virus earlier this week and who only sought treatment more than a week after starting to show symptoms, authorities said.

The DRC health authorities announced late Wednesday night the confirmation of a third case in the city of Goma.

Researchers in Uganda have launched the largest-ever trial of the experimental Ebola vaccine that is expected to be deployed in neighboring Congo, where a deadly outbreak has killed over 1,800 people.

The declaration of a global health emergency - the fifth in history - brought a surge of millions of dollars in new pledges by worldwide donors but some health workers say a new approach is needed to combat misunderstandings in the community. He was isolated at an Ebola treatment centre on Tuesday.

But the new cases in Goma are not linked to the first case, according to health officials.

It was earlier reluctant to do so, partly out of fear DR Congo's neighbours would shut their frontiers and impose strict trade or travel restrictions. The outbreak is centred in the northeast of the country.

On 11 June 2019, Uganda announced that three people had been positively diagnosed with Ebola, the first cross-border cases since the outbreak began.

It was the worst Ebola outbreak in the nation's history, with at least 2,700 people so far infected with the virus.

However, a unsafe mix of militia violence and a deep-seated mistrust of health workers and officials have hobbled efforts to contain the outbreak and halt its spread. It is highly contagious and often leads to death.
