UK Will Suspend the Freedom of Movement Immediately after Brexit

No-deal Brexit could abruptly end freedom of movement, says Home Office

Britain has said freedom of movement for people from the European Union "will end" after Brexit on 31 October, as the situation now stands.

She added the federal government deliberate "tougher criminality rules for people entering the UK" as a part of the brand new hardline stance.

A spokeswoman said: "Freedom of movement as it now stands will end on October 31 when the United Kingdom leaves the EU".

Home Office officials produced a discussion paper for a ministerial no-deal Brexit meeting last week warning that doing so could present a "handling and reputational risk" for the Government, the Times reported.

This was stated by a spokeswoman for Downing Street 10, cited by BGNES.

Those plans have been dropped by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in favour of a new approach to be set out at a later stage.

Theresa May's government was also committed to ending free movement "as soon as possible" and not before a transition period had elapsed.

Boris Johnson pledged that he would protect the rights of the 3 million European Union citizens living and working in the UK and invited them to apply through the UK Government Settled Status scheme.

Johnson has stated he favours a skills-based immigration system post-Brexit, however Downing Avenue is but to unveil full particulars.

So far, however, only about one million have acquired such status.

The prime minister is understood to be keen to strike a new deal with the European Union but is more willing than his predecessor to leave without one after October 31 should an agreement not be reached.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "EU citizens and their families still have until at least December 2020 to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme and one million people have already been granted status".

Labour MP Yvette Cooper, chairwoman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, said the panel had warned months ago that the Home Office "needed a proper plan or they would end up with a repeat of the Windrush scandal". This is due to end on Brexit but ministers had wanted to delay the ending of free movement until new rules and systems were in place but it would appear that Priti Patel is pushing for restrictions immediately on Brexit. Currently EU nationals are not subject to immigration control and can freely enter the UK.

Britain said on Monday it would end European Union freedom of movement rules immediately after it leaves the bloc on October 31 but Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country would not be hostile to immigration.
