Arlene Foster warns Northern Ireland-only backstop 'would be anti-democratic'

Britain is not searching for to negotiate a Northern Eire-only backstop arrangement, Primary Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman said on Tuesday, damping down expectations that the chief may possibly switch to a formerly-discarded concept to clear up a Brexit deadlock.

The Daily Telegraph reports leader Arlene Foster and Nigel Dodds were "receptive" to the idea although they stressed there could be no divergence in tariffs between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

"We want the referendum result implemented".

"The Prime Minister rejected a Northern Ireland only backstop in a letter to Donald Tusk on 19 August", said Arlene Foster. Leo Varadkar added that Ireland was open to alternatives to the Irish backstop, which has proved a major obstacle in negotiations, but had not received any from the UK.

"History teaches us that any deal relating to Northern Ireland which can not command cross community support is doomed to failure", Mrs Foster said.

Japan Considering Dumping Radioactive Water into the Sea, Minister Says
For the last eight years around 200 tonnes of radioactive water have been pumped out of the damaged reactor buildings every day. But the water, now stored in tanks at the Fukushima plant, is regarded by the government as relatively harmless to humans.

Johnson has insisted that the backstop, which would see Northern Ireland remaining tied to European Union rules to prevent a hard border across the island of Ireland while negotiations for a withdrawal continue, has to be ripped up from any deal he's willing to sign up-to.

Anyone born in Northern Ireland has the right to identify as Irish or British or both, thanks to the Good Friday Agreement, signed in April 1998 by the British and Irish governments and Northern Ireland's political parties.

"And in the context of Northern Ireland, when one is interpreting any piece of legislation one must look at the Belfast Agreement and the provisions of it, and interpret the legislation in a way which is consistent with it".

"To secure a sensible deal which respects the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom will require pragmatic discussions on all sides".

"The Prime Minister is 100% committed to getting a deal which works for the United Kingdom - and all of the United Kingdom - and abolishes the anti-democratic backstop", he added.
