British government downplays report on 'worst-case' Brexit

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron says the current PM Boris Johnson behaved 'appallingly' during the Brexit referendum campaign

Johnson insisted the bleak scenario was "not where we intend to end up".

Boris Johnson's government has released its "Operation Yellowhammer" planning document, which warns of medicine shortages, severe delays at the Dover-Calais crossing and an increase in food prices if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union without a deal.

"All the industries that matter will be ready for a no-deal Brexit", Johnson told reporters.

"What you're looking at here is just the sensible preparations - the worst-case scenario - that you'd expect any government to do".

"There may also be a rise in public disorder and community tensions", it says.

Meanwhile the leader of Kent County Council Paul Carter expressed his confidence that measures were in place to deal with the possible consequences of a no-deal.

"We are spending the money on doing lots of things to mitigate those assumptions", he told the BBC.

Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin on Thursday visited the customs transit zone at the French port of Ouistreham, across the English Channel from the British port of Portsmouth.

Boris Johnson has come under severe pressure following the release of the "Operation Yellowhammer" documents which assess the impact of Britain leaving the bloc without an agreement.

Former Attorney General Dominic Grieve said it was extraordinary that a United Kingdom government "is content on inflicting on the British public the level of disruption which is set out in the Yellowhammer papers".

Johnson insists the country must leave the European Union on October 31, with or without a divorce deal to smooth the way.

He has no majority in the Commons and suspended parliament on Monday until October 14 in an apparent bid to thwart opposition to a possible no-deal departure.

Michael Gove and Boris Johnson 'were trashing the government of which they were a part' says Cameron

The prime minister defended the decision again on Thursday, insisting he had not lied to the Queen about his motives for it.

Asked by the British broadcaster if he had lied, he replied: "Absolutely not!"

Scotland's highest court of appeal ruled on Wednesday that the suspension was not lawful and was meant to stymie lawmakers, prompting Mr Johnson's opponents to accuse him of lying to the Queen as to the reasons for the suspension.

The Government immediately announced it was lodging an appeal against the ruling.

A legal challenge that argued the government's Brexit strategy will damage the North of Ireland peace process has been dismissed.

"Yellowhammer shows how profoundly reckless it was to prorogue [suspend Parliament] and we support the urgent recall of UK Parliament at this time of national crisis".

"It is also now more important than ever that parliament is recalled and has the opportunity to scrutinise these documents and take all steps necessary to stop no deal", Labour's Brexit spokesperson Keir Starmer said.

Mr Gove, the United Kingdom cabinet minister responsible for no-deal planning, said "considerable steps" had been taken to ensure the safest possible departure after a no-deal Brexit in the six weeks since 2 August, the date on the document.

But the release has fuelled fears among MPs that a disorderly divorce would be calamitous.

But European leaders accuse him of offering no viable alternatives.

The document nonetheless says that "urgent action may need to be taken to make sure people continue to have access to clean water".

He added: "I don't think we'll have any issue whatsoever with medicines".
