British lawmakers vote to reject 2nd gov't bid for snap election

Johnson told a crowded chamber during angry exchanges: "The people of this country have had enough".

But it failed to gain the required two-thirds' support in the House of Commons.

Johnson wants a snap election October 15, just over two weeks before the scheduled October 31 date for Brexit. "I will not ask for another delay", he said. "Meanwhile this government will press on with negotiating a deal", Johnson said.

In his speech before the vote Johnson insisted that an election is "the only way to break the deadlock in the House [of Commons]" and to give the next prime minister "the strongest possible mandate to negotiate for our country at next month's European council." .

"I earlier urged the house to trust the people but once again, the opposition think they better" the prime minister said shortly after his defeat, adding that "they want the British prime minister to go to a vital negotiation without the power to walk away".

"We are not walking into a trap laid by the prime minister", he told lawmakers.

The British government has formally suspended Parliament, sending lawmakers home for five weeks amid a Brexit crisis.

MPs will not reassemble again at Westminster until October 14 when Queen Elizabeth II re-opens a new session of the parliament.

She also defended the bank mergers and said the effective dates for mergers should be decided by the bank boards. Dips and rise in GDP growth do happen, but we are not sitting without responding to boost it.

Politicians and political commentators are now left to ponder how the Brexit impasse will be resolved.

Reacting to the vote result and Johnson's comments, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn urged the prime minister to reveal details of his supposed proposals for negotiations with the European Union, including supposed proposals for the Irish backstop.

But Johnson reiterated his position that he would not ask for the extension.

The action shifted to the chamber of the Commons for a series of emergency debates, linked to Brexit.

Although Bercow was praised by politicians, including ministers, he has been blamed for making life hard for both Theresa May's and Johnson's governments by allowing backbench MPs to seize control of the parliamentary order paper.

Upon suffering another defeat in the Commons, Johnson said he would not give up on his quest to secure a better divorce deal with the United Kingdom, "no matter how many devices this parliament invents to tie my hands." .

Documents about Operation Yellowhammer were leaked to a national newspaper.

The court later agreed to release the documents to the media.
