Former Labour MPs tear into Jeremy Corbyn over antisemitism during debate

Jeremy Corbyn draws battle lines for a future election in fiery speech

Labour must prioritise reversing Brexit through another referendum, over winning power in a general election, its deputy leader Tom Watson is to say. Jeremy Corbyn has said that in government he would hold a referendum including a Remain option and a "credible Leave option".

Corbyn later met leaders of the key Labour-affiliated unions, and agreed the party should stick to its policy of backing a referendum, but ensuring they have something to offer leave supporters.

It is not clear how Watson expects parliament as it is now constituted to make a definite decision on Brexit, when the set of MPs now sitting have only shown an ability to delay and block various routes - from leaving with Theresa May's deal to exiting without a deal.

Mr Watson and other senior Labour figures, including Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer, say they will campaign to stay in the European Union in any circumstances.

"What we've rejected is the Trumpian no-deal position of Boris Johnson".

The UK prime minister chose to send MPs home through October 14, but first tried to call a snap election to ensure his parliamentary majority, but the House of Commons twice opposed that proposal.

In a speech on Wednesday in London, Mr Watson will say a single-issue Brexit election may not break the deadlock in Parliament - something only a second referendum can achieve with certainty.

Japan Considering Dumping Radioactive Water into the Sea, Minister Says
For the last eight years around 200 tonnes of radioactive water have been pumped out of the damaged reactor buildings every day. But the water, now stored in tanks at the Fukushima plant, is regarded by the government as relatively harmless to humans.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson accused Labour of running scared "because they fear that their party will lose" when it refused to back an early election on Monday. But the only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum. "A general election might well fail to solve this Brexit chaos".

After calling for a general election for two years, it is thought that the Labour leader would struggle to justify further votes against an early poll - particularly without the reason now being given, which is that Johnson could change the date of the election and have it take place after no deal.

The left-wing rebel told Parliament, as he was chided by former colleagues for his comments, that: "I think it's absolutely incredible [Labour] lecturing anybody else about observing the rule of law... the leader of the opposition, the shadow chancellor, who have spent their entire time in politics defending all sorts of extremists and in some cases terrorists and antisemites". I would never believe that I'd be leaving the Labour party because of racism...

While stopping short of calling for that himself, Mr Watson will say it is not too late for Labour to "win back" Remain voters from the Lib Dems if it campaigns "unequivocally" to remain.

"And I can tell you this: We're ready for that election".

Shortly before the Commons rose for five weeks - meaning MPs return with just 17 days to the Brexit deadline - they voted 293 to 46 in favour of a snap election, falling short of the required super-majority.

Mr Corbyn threatened to "unleash the biggest people-powered campaign we've ever seen" when addressing union members at the TUC Congress in Brighton on Tuesday.
