Hill will not be ready to play until at least the second Pool D game against Australia on September.

The Dragons lock captained Wales in two Tests against Argentina past year and head coach Warren Gatland has selected him for the tournament in Japan in the hope he can feature in the latter stages.

Carre only made his worldwide debut against Ireland in Saturday's 22-17 defeat in Cardiff but he was selected ahead of the more experienced Rob Evans and Samson Lee.

Wales coach Warren Gatland has included lock Corey Hill in his 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup in Japan despite the second rower being an injury concern having not played for the side since February.

"We'll have to assess the progress of someone like Cory Hill", Gatland said.

"They (medical staff) are confident that he will be up and training for that second game against Australia and he is a pretty good athlete, so we are not anxious from a conditioning point of view".

Wales are in Pool D at the World Cup and open their campaign against Georgia in Toyota on September 23.

Evans, 27, has won 36 caps and started in four of Wales' five Six Nations matches as they won the 2019 Grand Slam, while 26-year-old Lee has made 41 global appearances.

"I think it (squad) is good enough to win (the World Cup)".

"Rob hasn't trained a lot in the lead up to the warm-up matches". He came in with a shoulder injury, then a neck injury and a few back issues.

"Our original thinking was six props but we've chose to go with five", said Gatland. Samson has missed a few campaigns, had a hamstring issue during the campaign.

Other players to miss out include Owen Lane, Jonah Holmes, Scott Williams, Jarrod Evans and Bradley Davies.

"For us, with Rhys, the whole time he's been with us it has been about rebuilding his confidence".

It will be captain Alun Wyn Jones' fourth World Cup, with wing George North and hooker Ken Owens featuring in the tournament for a third time.
