Germany 2-4 Netherlands: Malen's dream debut settles Group C thriller

Netherlands had the better of the first-half possesion, but Germany looked more likely to score with Jasper Cillessen making a fine save on a Marco Reus shot just before half-time to keep the score 1-0 at the break.

"We are disappointed with the result but the Netherlands were the better side", said Loew.

The Germans travel to front-runners Northern Ireland while the Netherlands face Estonia on Monday.

Koeman's side came into the game under pressure.

Germany, by contrast, were in good spirits.

With Northern Ireland going so well and having lost 3-2 at home to Germany in March, Ronald Koeman's side could not afford another slip-up, which looked on the cards after Gnabry followed up Lukas Klostermann's saved shot to score his fifth global goal in six games.

Late goals from Donyell Malen and Georginio Wijnaldum gave Ronaldo Koeman's team all three points and it was a memorable evening for Frenkie de Jong, too.

Some poor defending gifted Serge Gnabry a close-range goal from a Lukas Klostermann rebound after the RB Leipzig player had got in behind the Dutch defence on a counter-attack.

The goal, Gnabry's fifth in six games for Germany, remained the only highlight in a cagey first half.

The game opened up as Germany probed for a second just after the break, but it was the Dutch who took advantage, gratefully exploiting the newfound gaps in the hosts' back line.

The Dutch looked more threatening to start the second half and were soon level when Frenkie de Jong made a ideal first touch on a Ryan Babel cross and buried his shot past Manuel Neuer with his second to make it 1-1.

They turned the game around within seven minutes, first scoring through De Jong in the 59th and then taking the lead courtesy of Tah's unfortunate own goal.

Briefly stunned, the Germans were given a lifeline when a disoriented De Ligt accidentally brought down a high ball with his outstretched hand in the box.

Germany looked to have claimed a draw via Toni Kroos' penalty, given for a dubious handball against De Jong.

The win also moves Netherlands on to six points in Group C, though they are still six adrift of Northern Ireland, who have played a game more, and three back of Germany.

Wijnaldum completed the victory in stoppage time and ended Germany's 14-match winning run in World Cup and Euro qualifiers.

"Overall we worked harder than Germany for this victory".
