Mr Watson will claim going to the polls would not break the Brexit deadlock and insist that while a vote "might at this moment seem inevitable, but that doesn't make it desirable".

Union leaders have pledged marches to force a general election "as soon as possible" - even though it is Jeremy Corbyn who is standing in the way of one.

Watson will insist that it is not too late to win back remainers attracted by the Lib Dems' simpler "stop Brexit" message.

'We want an election as soon as possible and we will oppose a national unity government, the main objective of which would be to prevent a Corbyn- led government.' Dave Ward, general secretary of the CWU, which represents post office workers, said: 'I want us trade unionists to be in towns and cities, where Boris Johnson is going to try to create his new army over one issue - Brexit. But we won't allow Johnson to dictate the terms.

"I was very moved by the passion of experienced health workers who care so deeply for the communities they serve, but who see first hand the damaging effects of austerity. And in that election we will commit to a public vote with a credible option to leave and the option to remain".

A number of Mr Corbyn's colleagues want the party to unequivocally back Remain, but big backer the Unite union wants to ensure Leave is still an option. "And I think that's unbelievable, that decent people who have devoted their entire lives to mainstream politics are being driven out by this culture of extremism and in some cases, anti-semitism.I have to be honest and the truth is that I have become ashamed of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn".

He will promise that MPs won't be "silenced" by Johnson's decision to prorogue parliament. "Just as we worked throughout the summer to pass a law preventing no deal, so we will work each and every day we are shut down to enforce that law". As the Prime Minister's top adviser reportedly said, the negotiations are "a sham".

Watson's intervention is likely to be viewed as less than helpful by the Labour leadership. It may be ancient history to some of Labour's young new recruits, but many people will never forget how they supported terrorists responsible for horrific carnage in a brutal civil war which saw people blown up in pubs, hotels, and shopping centres.

Lewis told MPs: "Because [Jeremy Corbyn's] leadership has the led to the party of anti-racism and equality becoming the party of institutionalised antisemitism, so much so Mr Speaker that the majority of Jews in this country feel they would not be safe in the event of him becoming Prime Minister".

But, while Labour-affiliated unions would rather stay in the EU than have no deal, they believe a Labour government should offer voters a choice in a referendum between a negotiated deal and Remain. We've got to defeat Boris Johnson at that election'.

Labour's Brexit policy has shifted in a series of incremental steps over the past 12 months, from a referendum being one option "on the table", to its preferred route out of the deadlock in parliament.
