Local colleges make US News & World Report's 'Best Colleges 2020' list

The news of the universities' improved status in the U.S. News & World Report's "2020 Best Colleges" prompted the governor to visit both campuses Monday morning to tout their success.

The College's Schroeder Center for Career Development garnered exceptional marks for its efforts, ranking No. 2 nationally in "Best Alumni Network" to go with a No. 3 placement for "Best School for Internships", and occupied the fifth spot in the "Best Career Services" listing.

UChicago is ranked significantly lower than its peer institutions in Top Performers in Social Mobility, a separate ranking by the U.S. News & World Report first published this year.

Among 146 public universities nationwide, the University of Maine Orono was rated 100th - down three spots from a 97th place ranking a year ago.

"Wagner is truly one of the nation's most innovative colleges, because our faculty collaborate so creatively in designing and delivering the curriculum while also connecting the coursework to the wider world through experiential learning and internships", said Wagner College President Joel W. Martin. In addition, Baylor was among the top universities for student engagement as measured by the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking.

FSU shares the No. 18 spot with three other public universities: Penn State University, Purdue University and the University of Pittsburgh.

In the national universities category, the University of California campuses led, but not Berkeley and UCLA.

Other Maine schools in the rankings include the University of New England, rated 246th out of 399 national universities; and Maine Maritime Academy, which ranked 5th among 58 Northeast regional colleges.

Here's where other NY schools landed on the national rankings list.

No. 66 Best Undergraduate Business Programs.

The next closest ranked school in Ohio is Ohio State University at 54 overall. The national universities category comprises 381 institutions (208 public, 172 private and 1 proprietary) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees.

The graduation-rate performance category uses the university's six-year graduation rate and compares it to predicted performance based on admissions data, school financial resources, the proportion of federal financial aid recipients who are first-generation (a new factor), math and science orientations and the proportion of undergraduates receiving Pell grants.

This year, they reportedly looked at almost 1,400 colleges and universities, measuring them on factors including academic quality, graduation and retention rates, social mobility, and value.
