McIlroy tops Koepka for player of the year

Rory McIlroy was named the PGA Tour's Player of the Year on Wednesday, winning the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award for the third time.

As well as the Tour Championship/FedEx Cup crown, his 2019 season also included victories at The Players Championship and the RBC Canadian Open.

"You know, I think players don't just feel that four weeks a year is important", McIlroy said.

There was much debate following the Tour Championship about whether the award should go to Koepka or McIlroy.

It is the third time in his career that the Northern Ireland golfer has won the award, which is voted for by the tour's membership.

After playing exclusively in the U.S. until July, skipping the Irish Open at Lahinch, McIlroy racked up 14 top-10 finishes in the U.S. and vowed to repeat his US-based schedule in 2020 before admitting that with a May 28-31 date likely for the Irish Open in 2020, he'd "definitely" play if such a move is confirmed.

But in the end, it turned out to be a career highlight for the three-time Oscar nominated actor. But then there was something that was drawing me toward it...

McIlroy admitted he was surprised to win the award over Koepka, who last month was named PGA of America Player of the Year and considered the front-runner after finishing in the top-five at each major, including at the PGA Championship where he picked up his fourth major title.

"I thought maybe Brooks wining the PGA Championship this year was going to be the difference maker but the other players thought differently". Koepka also won three times, including the PGA Championship and a World Golf Championship.

But McIlroy wasn't almost as good as Koepka in majors.

Along with a second straight PGA Championship title, Koepka also won the C.J. Cup and WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Here's how the two finished this season. He shot in the 60s in 11 of 16 rounds in major championships this season, joining Spieth (2015) for second most in the Masters era.
