Meanwhile, family spokesperson Leo Mugabe told news agency Reuters that the former president would be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Sunday.

"They have now pronounced their position so if they have pronounced that the burial will be at the Heroes Acre that means that we now have to wait for the details... whether it will be a private burial or a public one".

He dismissed as absolute nonsense reports that President Mnangagwa tried to bribe traditional chiefs from Zvimba to have Cde Mugabe buried at the National Heroes Acre.

Although Roman Catholic priest father Fidelis Mukonori was the mediator between the army and the Mugabe family during the power negotiations, Mugabe revealed that he sent former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono on the task to convince VP Chiwenga.

Mnangagwa, a one-time protege of Mugabe, called the former president a "national icon" after his death.

On Friday, foreign dignitaries were due to start arriving in Harare ahead of a state funeral planned to be held at the country's National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Mugabe fired Mnangagwa in 2017, in what many believed was an attempt to position his wife Grace to succeed him.

"We said we will bury him on Sunday, but how, it will be decided", Mnangagwa said, addressing mourners at Mugabe's Blue Roof residence.

After the bitter fallout between Mnangagwa and Mugabe, the former president further showed his disapproval of Mnangagwa's presidency when he endorsed opposition party, MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa for the July 2018 elections.

He remained free in Zimbabwe with his family after he was forced from office.

Zimbabweans still struggle to survive, with a once-vaunted public health system now a shambles and the economy still in crisis.

A massive fuel price hike this year sparked nationwide protests which left at least 17 people dead after soldiers opened fire.
