South Africa: Nigeria to repatriate 600 citizens amid violence

A Nigerian man who is one of those leaving South Africa to return to his home country has vowed not to return.

And retaliatory attacks in Nigeria forced South African businesses there to shut down for several days.

Nigeria began repatriating more than 600 of its citizens from South Africa following a wave of deadly xenophobic attacks that frayed relations among neighbouring nations. He said the "most significant negative impact is around sentiment" as MTN investors around the world called him anxious about the images they were seeing on TV.

At a press conference with business leaders on Monday, South Africa's police minister Bheki Cele tried to deemphasize the role of xenophobia in the attacks saying the police were focused on criminality by all actors regardless of nationality.

Bruins hand coach Bruce Cassidy multi-year extension
Cassidy ultimately replaced Julien on February 7, 2017, the Bruins poking along with a lackluster 26-23-6 record. In two-plus seasons with the team, Cassidy has a 117-52-22 record with three straight postseason appearances.

He thanked the Nigerian government and the High Commission in South Africa for their assistance.

The first batch of 84 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa arrived Nigeria on Wednesday, September 11 at 2.p.m. local time via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, in the company of officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. What's happening can never be prevented by any government.

Answering a question in an interview in Cape Town last Thursday where she was attending the World Economic Forum on Africa, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said, "There isn't anything that justifies the level of violence against another person for trying to make a livelihood and, in particular, in the African context, a guest in your home should not be harmed". "Incidents of attacks on businesses have since been reported in parts of the central business district where police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to restrain the growing crowd who attempted to move through the CBD via corner Bree and Twist Streets", the police spokesperson said in a statement.
